Illinois residents experienced a small 3.8 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday at around 3:59 AM (1:59 AM Pacific). It was centered about 3 miles south-southwest of Pingree Grove, IL and just 20 miles north-northwest of Aurora, IL.

The U.S. Geological Survey says Chicago residents may have felt the tremor. Chicago was just 30 miles east-southeast of the epicenter. The depth of the quake was 8.6 miles below the surface of the earth.

It is uncertain whether this was a pre-shock of a bigger event to come, but earthquakes in this area are rare. In fact, earthquakes east of the Rocky Mountains are rare, but when they do occur they are usually small and felt over large areas. Quakes can be felt 10-times as far east of the Rockys as they can be felt to the west, the USGS reports.

The fault which caused the quake has not been identified. It is believed to be “un-named”, so this may be a new one. Most identified fault lines are found west of the Rocky Mountains.

“Earthquakes everywhere occur on faults within bedrock, usually miles deep. Most of the region’s bedrock was formed as several generations of mountains rose and were eroded down again over the last billion or so years,” the report stated.

The known seismic zones east of the Rocky Mountains include the New Madrid zone centered on southeastern Missouri, the Saint Lawrence rift system, the Charlevoix-Kamouraska seismic zone of eastern Quebec (large quake in 1925). Earthquakes can also occur in New York, Philadelphia, and along the Wilmington urban corridor.

Aaliyah Birthday | Aaliyah | Aaliyah Biography

Aaliyah Birthday | Aaliyah | Aaliyah Biography
http://news.puggal.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/aaliyah2-thumb.jpg
Today is Aaliyah’s birthday. American recording artist, actress and model Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born on January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. So the January 16th marks both the nationwide opening of the Biggie biopic Notorious and what would have been the 30th birthday of Aaliyah. Both of them spent too-short time on the planet but they were very talented. In 1994, the R&B singer and actress Aaliyah released her platinum debut album Age Ain’t Nothin’ But a Number.

The beautiful and young actress died in a plane crash in 2001. That time she was on the peak of her career and her last album Aaliyah went gold within a month of its release. Her friends like Timbaland and Missy Elliott still miss her and reference her in their work. Even after her death a host of famous names including Rosario Dawson, Quincy Jones, Missy, Jay-Z and Toni Braxton filmed a video of five top hits “Miss You” just to pay tribute to baby girl.

ABC Dancing With the Stars 2009

Three opinionated judges. Sixteen professional dancers. Sixteen celebrities. Two hosts and lots of glitter and spray tans. That's the basic formula for Dancing with the Stars, but, really, there's nothing formulaic or predictable about the series because it's our show. We call the shots. We determine who stays and who goes each week.

No, we'll never be able to dance like Julianne Hough, Maksim Chmerkovskiy or Cheryl Burke, and that's exactly why we watch. We can totally relate to the stars competing on the show and it's pretty cool to know they're just like us. These actors, comedians, musicians, entrepreneurs, reality stars and where-are-they-now personalities start out as lumbering Frankensteins with two left feet, and they slowly transform (we hope) into graceful twinkle-toed Baryshnikovs. OK, our weekly phone and online votes aren't powerful enough to help them that much, but we do have the power to determine the show's outcome.

You'd think the stars were competing for more than just a mirrored disco ball, the way the celebs risk torn ligaments, poked eyes, fainting spells and wardrobe malfunctions to earn a perfect 30 from judges Carrie Anne Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli. We'd never want to face their wrath, but it sure is fun to see them unleash it on the stars. That's probably the one time we wouldn't want to be in the stars' shoes, no matter how shiny and glittery they might be.

Meet this season's pairs who are eager to put on their shoes and begin learning the steps:

Meriwether came second in the race to Miss California and if Johnson is not able to fulfill her duties, she can step into the coveted shoes.

UFC 106 Results | UFC

ufc 106 | ufc 106 live stream free | ufc 106 video | ufc 106 fight card

Ufc106_v31

In a rematch of their memorable 2006 fight in Anaheim, former UFC light-heavyweight champions Tito Ortiz of Huntington Beach and Forrest Griffin of Las Vegas renewed acquaintances in Ortiz's UFC comeback fight following a contract split last year.

Griffin dominated the third and final round, blitzing Ortiz with hard rights to the face and combinations that included hard shots to the body and tough kicks to the left leg. Ortiz was cut under the left eye in the round and sustained some good combinations.

The judges saw it like this: split-decision win for Griffin.

Ortiz, as usual, had a memorable ring entrance with Eminem blaring at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, waving the American flag.

First round:

Ortiz takes a right standing up, but charges and lands a right. Ortiz takes down Griffin and tries to ground and pound with some elbows flying. Griffin gets up, the pair end up reversing each other against the cage.

Griffin kicks Ortiz in the left leg, like he did against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Griffin hits Ortiz with a right-left combo punch to face. Ortiz misses a takedown. Both guys jab.

I give the round to Griffin.

Second round:

Ortiz takes down Griffin, smacks him with elbows. Griffin gets back up. Griffin kicks Ortiz in the mouth, knocking out Tito's mouthpiece. Tito takes down Griffin again, Griffin playing defense on ground versus former CIF champion wrestler.

Ortiz sends some elbows and fists to Griffin's face on the mat. Griffin's cut under the left eye, and now has a nasty cut at the right eye. Gushing everywhere. Griffin reverses Ortiz, trying to win round. Some pushing post-bell.

I give the round to Ortiz.

-----

The co-main event, a welterweight clash pitting San Jose fighters Anthony Johnson and Josh Koscheck, will put the winner in prime position for a title shot at champion Georges St-Pierre.

Koscheck initially got the better of stand-up striking exchanges before Johnson popped in two jabs. Johnson slipped a clench, but then committed a rule-breaking violation by sending a right knee toward Koscheck's head.

Kneeing on the mat, Koscheck appeared to have got his arm up in time to deflect the blow toward his right eye. Referee Mario Yamasaki stopped the action and deducted a point from Johnson for the illegal knee. A ringside doctor was summoned and reported to the ref that Koscheck had "blurry vision as a result of the foul."

Still, the fight resumed and Koscheck turned to wrestling. Johnson was seen with a small cut over the left eye.

In the second round, Johnson was poked in the left eye twice in the first minutes. Both fighters had a lively exchange of blows in the center of the octagon. Koscheck got Johnson on his back and sent a few damaging elbows to the 25-year-old's head.

Koscheck (12-4) maneuvered behind Johnson (8-3), squeezing under Johnson's thin tight, forcing Johnson to tap out by the rear naked chokehold with 13 seconds left in the round.

Koscheck called out Dan Hardy, ridiculing his status as the top welterweight contender afterward.

"He ain't fought nobody like me," Koscheck told Joe Rogan in the postfight interview.

UFC 106 is loaded with welterweight action, and the third of four bouts featured Brazil's Paulo Thiago (12-1) vs. Minnesota's Jacob Volkmann (9-1).

Thiago cut the bridge of Volkmann's nose early in the bout, then capped the first round with a right to the face that knocked him down. Thiago again sent Volkmann to the canvas with a kick to the body early in the second. The stronger Thiago also battered Volkmann on the mat.

Volkmann had a few moments of challenging Thiago, getting him in a choke late in the third, but it was too little, and the Brazilian won a unanimous decision.

The UFC sneaked in some undercard pre-pay-per-view bouts on the broadcast, in which welterweight Ben Saunders delivered two brutal knees to the face of Marcus Davis, ending the fight 3:24 into the first round.

Middleweight Kendall Grove used his long legs to force Jake Rosholt to tap out due to triangle choke 3:59 into the first round.

The pay-per-view portion began with a welterweight bout between Phil Baroni and Amir Sadollah.

Baroni, in his return to the UFC following a four-year absence and stint in Elite Xtreme Combat, came out punching, but couldn't sustain the effort and started taking a slew of knees from Muay Thai specialist Sadollah (2-1). A monster right from Sadollah cut Baroni near the left eye.

Sadollah remained on the attack to start the second, Baroni noticeably tired in the second, taking a wicked right kick to the left leg. His corner urged Baroni to "take [Sadollah] out" in the third, but Sadollah clearly had that same notion in mind. Baroni sustained a big gash on his forehead. Sadollah continued the pounding in the final minutes, a severe test of Baroni's toughness but a testament to Sadollah's overall skills.

A tremendous effort by Saddolah (3-1), confirmed by his unanimous-decision triumph as Baroni drops to 13-12.

A light-heavyweight battle between Luiz Cane and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, the brother of the former heavyweight champ, ends quickly as the veteran Nogueira unloaded five big left-handed punches to open the fight, the last of which was the most devastating and led to a technical knockout called 1:56 into the first round.

In his UFC debut, Nogueira (18-3) had an impressive corner, including his brother Antonio Rodrigo and middleweight champ Anderson Silva.
