Gireesh Puthenchery [1961-2010] was a noted Malayalam lyricist and Screen play writer. He also served as a governing council member of the Indian Performance Rights Society (IPRS). He was born to Pulikkal Krishna Panicker and Meenakshiyamma in Puthenchery near Ulliyeri village in Kozhikode district. His father was an Astrologer-Ayurvedic practitioner and his mother was a Carnatic musician.

Besides writing lyrics for several hit songs, Girish had also written the script for the films Melepparambil Aanveedu, Vadakkunnathan and Pallavoor Devanarayanan. He was scripting a film by the name of Raman Police in which Mohanlal was expected to play the lead role.

Beginning his career in the 1989 film "Enquiry", Girish went on to write lyrics for about 1556 songs in about 328 Malayalam films. His first popular hit songs were from the movie Johny Walker. Happy Husbands released on January 14, 2010 was his last film.

He suffered a brain haemorrhage and died at a private hospital on Wednesday Feb 10,2010 (aged 48). He is survived by his wife Beena and children Jithin Krishnan (Engineering student) and Dinanath (Plus Two student).
